XJTU started the internationaleducation in 1959 and is among the first batch of universities assigned by theMinistry of Education to cultivate overseas students with Chinese GovernmentScholarship. In 1991, a specialized department for teaching Chinese as aForeign Language was established in XJTU to develop Chinese language teachingprogram. In 1999, Xi’an Jiaotong University Scholarship was founded. In 2007,Bachelor’s Degree program in Chinese Language was set up. In 2013, XJTU wasrated as “Model University for Overseas Education” along with PekingUniversity, Tsinghua University and other 22 universities in China due to theoutstanding performance in the number of cultivated overseas students, teachingstructure, quality, management, development speed and so on.
Started in 1995, XJTU has become thefirst university to develop English-medium MBBS program for internationalstudents in China. In 2000, the university set up English-medium Master’sprogram of Medicine. Since 1995, it has cultivated more than 2000 internationalmedical students from 63 countries, ranking on the top in the number foroverseas graduates in China. In 2005, XJTU, authorized by the Ministry ofEducation, drafted the “ Interim Provisions for Quality Control Standards onUndergraduate Medical Education in English for International Student in China”.
Currently, XJTU has 62 English-mediumMaster’s programs and 7 English-medium Bachelor’s programs offered by 12schools. There are more than 2400 international students from 132 countriessuch as America, Pakistan, France, Italy, Turkey, Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan,Nepal, India, Thailand, and Republic of Korea, among which over 400 studentsenjoy Chinese Government Scholarship.
Cooperated with overseasuniversities, XJTU has established two Confucius Institutes. In 2007, alongwith University of Nebraska-Lincoln America, XJTU set up its first overseasConfucius Institute—UNLCI; In 2009, the second Confucius Institute---UOLCI wasestablished under the cooperation with University of Liverpool, UK. The twoinstitutes has devoted to Chinese teaching and cultural exchanges by closecooperation with related departments, which benefits more than ten thousands oflocal people of the related countries. The number of students coming to XJTUfor study and exchanges as well as educational officials for visiting from thetwo institutes witnesses a steady increase year by year.
